New Year, New You!

2013 has been a busy year and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2014!

As we say goodbye to the current year, I wanted to thank my loyal patients for your support and wish you all a wonderful 2014. Our office building has seen a major construction project this past year (still unfinished), and we used the opportunity to perform a complete remodel of our office. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop in for a cup of freshly brewed coffee and take a quick tour of our gorgeous new facility!

What else happened in 2013?

Everything! We moved a step closer to the Holy Grail of plastic surgery.

This year saw the development of what may be the single most revolutionary procedure for rejuvenating aging skin and soft tissue. Not by pulling, freezing, burning or lasering, but truly repairing and restoring damaged skin. We call it Nano Stem Serum, and this is how it works:

I remain a leading edge surgeon and advocate for Natural Fat Transfer, where we use natural adipose (fat) tissue to fill lines and soften the thinning face as it ages. For reference, you can hear me talk about this in multiple short videos on my website. We now take the remaining, purified fat and gently process it to extract stem cells from the tissue and concentrate them into a smooth liquid. This serum is thin enough to be injected directly into damaged skin.

We can now make skin more healthy by placing growth factors and reparative stem cells exactly where we want them - in the skin! Injected into crows’ feet, upper lips lines and crepey skin, we see thickening and a smoother appearance. In the décolletage, we see softening and disappearance of wrinkles. We are also studying the effect of placing Nano Stem Serum into the lower eyelid skin for improvement of dark circles and skin discoloration.

Please feel free to call our office for any additional information we might be able to provide, and wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year!

Face Lift Surgery Let’s You Fall in Love Again With the Way You Look

Facial rejuvenation is the fastest way to take years off your appearance because some of the most visible signs of aging first appear on the face. Although the changes appear gradually, there may come a day when you look in the mirror and decide that the face you see doesn’t reflect the way you feel about yourself. Dr. Koplin considers this “Epiphany Day.” If you want to look better, younger, more rested and relaxed, face-lift surgery may be one of your best options.

A face lift is an operation designed to reposition the facial tissues to the location and condition they occupied in your youth. We understand that you do not want to look “different,” only to roll back the years to a point where you still loved the way you looked. Our goal is to ensure you are the same recognizable person you were before, just more comfortable looking in the mirror. People will notice not that you had something done, but that you just “look great.”

We accomplish this by paying attention to the cardinal elements of facial aging:

Is Face Lift Surgery Right For You?

Face lifts are most commonly performed on patients in the 40-60 age range. Facial rejuvenation can also produce superb results for you in your 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as well.

Dr. Koplin – Pioneering a New and Better Result for Face Lifts

Attention to detail, expertise in surgical technique, and pioneering work in the area of Natural Fat Transfer sets Dr. Koplin apart from other surgeons. Dr. Koplin is one of the original practitioners of Natural Fat Transfer, also called fat-grafting. For nearly 20 years, he has provided fuller, healthier and more youthful results with his specialized Natural Fat Transfer techniques. This procedure transfers fat from unwanted areas of your body, such as the abdomen or thighs, to facial areas that have lost fat and their youthful contours. Dr. Koplin shapes and sculpts the face; filling in areas that have thinned with age, such as temples, cheeks, eye hollows, and the jaw line. This technique, in combination with face lift surgery, produces truly natural results never achieved with “pulling” alone which can create a “wind tunnel” effect. Compare our before and after facelift photos to those of other surgeons and you will clearly see the difference in our results.

The Face Lift Consultation with Dr. Koplin

A personal consultation is your first step when considering face lift surgery. During this initial meeting, Dr. Koplin will assess your physical and emotional health, and discuss your specific cosmetic goals for surgery. He will appraise your bone and deep tissue structure, consider your skin’s thickness, texture and elasticity, and recommend a specific, custom plan for you. He’ll also discuss any issues that could make surgery more complicated, like uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood-clotting problems, or the tendency to form excessive scars.

How is a Face Lift Performed?

There are many variations to the facelift procedure, individualized for you by Dr. Koplin. The incision is typically hidden in the natural contour of your ear, and extends around the earlobe into the hairline. Working through this incision, Dr. Koplin delicately frees the facial skin from the underlying tissues. The true power and magic of the surgery then begins. The surgery is not a process of pulling on the skin; it is a repositioning of deeper tissues, layer by layer, to the location they occupied in youth. This crucial point is the difference between the caricature of tight, “wind-blown” features versus the true rollback of time to the point the person identifies as their “natural” self. The only skin removed is the true excess after the deep layers are properly tightened, allowing it to redrape into its new position. If necessary, an incision under the chin allows Dr. Koplin to remove fatty tissue, define the jaw line, and eliminate the cord-like structures of the underlying muscles in the neck.

State-of-the-Art Operating Facility

Your custom procedure will be performed in a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility associated with our medical office. We are fully accredited by Medicare and AAAASF, and are held to the same standards as an operating room in a private or university hospital.

Your Face Lift Surgical Procedure

General anesthesia is the gold standard for this operation. Under this type of anesthesia, you are fully asleep; there is no pain and no awareness. Safety and comfort are paramount. Your anesthesia provider has a wealth of experience in facial procedures, safety, and care. You will spend one to two hours in a fully-monitored and state-of-the art recovery room at the surgery center. Your registered nurse will be at your side every moment to attend to your safety and comfort.

Face Lift Recovery and Convalescence

We usually require two nights of recovery at a local facility, where staff will attend to all your needs during the critical 48 hours following your procedure. They’ll provide a hospital bed with head elevation, cold compresses around the clock, all meals and administration of all appropriate medications. They will also pick you up from our recovery room, drive you to your postoperative appointments, and even wash your hair in a salon-style sink. From years of experience, we’ve learned that each day in a skilled facility shortens your overall recovery by a week! Once you return home, our customized instruction sheets will guide you in continuing your care until you are 100% recovered.

What to expect the first two weeks after face lift surgery:

Day 1- Face lift Surgery
Day 2- Visit our office for a checkup and dressing change. Often, there are no more bandages beyond this point!
Day 3- You’ll return home. You may shower and wash your own hair!
Day 4- Visit our office, where we’ll begin suture removal, starting with all visible areas.
Day 5 & 6- You can relax at home
Day 7- We’ll remove half of all your sutures during an office visit.
Day 8 & 9- You can increase your activities at home. You’ll be able to walk outside, visit with friends, and even drive your car.

Day 10- During an office visit, we’ll remove all remaining sutures. Most bruising is either resolved or hidden. You most likely can wear makeup at this point.

Return to work and normal activities

Most patients experience no pain and minimal discomfort from the procedure. Many are back to work after two weeks, though you may want to take a third week if you are in the public eye. If you’re fortunate enough to work from home, you can get right back to the computer and telephone as long as you don’t overdo things. Almost everyone may begin aerobic exercise and stretching two weeks after the procedure.

Return to full activities

You may be amazed to be back in the world after only three weeks –working, exercising, and returning to most normal activities. You’ll have no pain, but a feeling of tightness around the chin and neck is a good reminder of your recent corrective work. Numbness of the ears, cheeks and neck may take many months to completely resolve. We will follow you during this time, with weekly visits that quickly become monthly. During this time, we will constantly advise you about workouts, activity, skin care, and any other questions you may have.

Will I need this procedure again?

Hopefully not! The technique as performed by Dr. Koplin is all-encompassing, with the goal of a truly long-lasting, natural result. Unfortunately, time and gravity are not always our friends; therefore, some form of touchup may be appropriate in the future. Loss of “baby fat” and thinning of the face are the most common long-term issues. These can usually, and very easily, be corrected by small sessions of Natural Fat Transfer to appropriate areas as necessary. Happily, we promise “lifetime” follow-ups without charge, where we’ll gladly consult with you and discuss any questions you may have. You also have our promise that we will use the smallest and simplest solution possible.

If you’d like to find out how a face lift could help you look younger, more rested and refreshed, and closer to your ideal self, please schedule your consultation today.
